08/03/2017 - GOOGLE’S FEATURED SNIPPETS ARE WORSE THAN FAKE NEWS

https://theoutline.com/post/1192/google-s-featured-snippets-are-worse-than-fake-news

In a university in Ohio a student believed that several presidents were members of the KKK, when the professor asked where they got the information from. The student had searched it on Google and was right at the top of the page. Because Google have recognised that people want fast answers and they gave it to them, a box at the top of the page with information from the webpage that contains the information USING AN ALGORITHM. the algorithm cannot check to see what is fake news so is occasionally showing something fake as it's top site. 'Google need to invest in human" to sort the problem

Ofcom's recent research into the media habits of children found that among 12- to 15-year-olds, Google came second only to BBC sites as their preferred source of "true and accurate information about things going on in the world".

I think that this is showing the extent of the fake news issue, especially the reluctancy to deal with the issue. If google, one of the largest websites is 'in deep' with the fake news and not actively addressing it, we cannot expect smaller organisations to deal with it especially if they use google to fact check.
