11/01/17 - How Does China Censor the Internet?

http://www.economist.com/blogs/economist-explains/2013/04/economist-explains-how-china-censors-internet

China controls how the internet is consumed by its citizens. China is ranked the third most restrictive countries in the world. There are two ways to control what is being seen, The Great Firewall  where there is a system in place that started in the 1990s that limited access to foreign sites. Domestic surveillance system was set up in 1998.
' The censorship system's main goal is to prevent the internet from being used to co-ordinate or organise real-world political activity. In extreme cases, internet access may be cut off altogether, as happened for ten months in 2009, after riots in Xinjiang, a remote north-western region.'
In short, China is having it both ways: it is allowing its citizens to benefit from the social and commercial aspects of the internet, while placing strict limits on its use for political activism.

O In 2016 our of a population of 1,382,323,332 there were 721,434,547 internet users.
O On September 14th 1987 the first email from china was sent.
O China is ranked the third most restrictive countries in the world.
O Domestic surveillance system was set up in 1998.

I think that the China censorship could easily be a more subtle version of what some people want to do. Particularly certain extremists/dictators. The control could easily be dangerous, even though it seems that it isn't as extreme as what most media suggests there is a level of too much control, everyone should have the ability to views anything regardless of their political stance. controlling this may mean that certain issues faced within the country may never be addressed so the same people will only benefit and nothing can be done to change it or to try and view an alternative opinion.
