MM52: Somebody's Watching You

The article is focused on privacy and how this can be breached given the advances in new technology. An example of this would be In Philadelphia where schools gave students to laptops and enabled teachers to spy on them via the webcams. The privacy breech is also related to the another life sphere, when people are constantly looking at you in your bedroom. Data mining, is completely legal and is why large companies are able to stay a free product.

I'm not worried about people tracking my movements to a certain extent as it enable me to use apps such as maps with ease however I am concerned about certain apps where requiring my location isn't particularly necessary as it won't effect the app and how I use it.

Depending on  how the information is used I do think that this is a small price to pay but there are some extents particularly when information is sold to a third party whom may or may not have completely said what they are going to do with the information they have been sold. I believe that this issue is overlooked because most companies value making a profit over everything else.

Introduction to NDM: reading and blog task

1) Read the first two articles. Write one paragraph on each summing up the key aspects.

Julian Sefton-Green wanted to know whether social media was interfering in the lives of the youth. Adults believe that kids us the internet in illegal and inappropriate ways, this however was not found in the research. Schools have adopted a popular culture approach to certain aspects of their lessons which include using things from the internet, such as clips and voting systems. However many teachers are unable to fully use the new technology due to their lack of understanding. There was also a lot of evidence in the case of Facebook that students believe what was said on their was private. This in turn caused a lot of issues that teacher often found difficult to resolve.

Periscope offers consumers a sense of teleportation across the globe as they are able to see what people are filming in real time in another place, experiencing what they are experiencing. However this app is helping to support the Idea that we have now lost all privacy as we are posting aspects of our life online and it could also be a platform for bullying and humiliation as it is live and once it has been recorded it cannot be edited or cut out. Apps like this have also contributed to piracy and copyright issues and poses as a threat to certain industries as people may start preferring watching free livestreams of content rather than paying.
2) Now read the A2 A* essay. Why do you think it was so successful?

I think that the essay was so successful because
o There were a lot of examples and figures.
o Alternate Interpretations.
o Expanding on certain points (Taylor Swift)
o Saying how it affects the music industry.
o Constant reference to the audience - Effect on them and how they affect certain things.
o Final conclusion, links back to the question.
3) Finally, answer this question in a well developed paragraph on your blog: How has digital media changed your life in the last 5 years (for positive or negative)?

Digital Media has changed my life in the sense that I have found a new way to unwind and entertain myself at the end of the day. For instance Instead of watching TV I watch YouTube. I also consume more informative media such as news than I did before I started using digital media as much as I do now this may be due to the fact sites such as twitter are the places in which news is reveal. However I do spend a lot of time online now which could be seen quite negatively but this is also due to schoolwork being available online.
